Javelin Throwers Compete at Georgia Tech Invitational
May 11, 2012
ATLANTA - Wake Forest javelin throwers Ben Lincoln, Patrick Donelan and Sarah Brobeck each competed in their signature event on Friday afternoon at the Georgia Tech Invitational in an attempt to qualify for or improve upon their current season-best marks.
The meet served as the second of three last-chance NCAA First Round East Regional qualifiers that the Demon Deacons will take part in this weekend. The top 48 declared athletes in each region per event qualify for the NCAA First Round Meets, which will take place May 24-26 in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 12 athletes from each region then advance to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 6-9.
Final regional rankings and qualifying marks will not be released until later next week, following the conclusion of all last-chance qualifying meets.
Senior Sarah Brobeck was the lone competitor on the women's side, as she placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 127-2 (38.76 meters). The Salem, Ohio, native currently ranks second on the all-time Wake Forest charts in the javelin with a personal-best mark of 141-4 (43.09 meters) set earlier this season at the Wake Forest Open.
School record-holder Ben Lincoln finished first overall in the javelin on Friday with a throw of 227-1 (69.22 meters). The junior from Hingham, Mass., owns a personal-best throw of 240-3 (73.23 meters), which currently ranks him ninth in the NCAA East Region and 14th overall nationally.
Donelan turned in a mark of 181-3 (55.26 meters) to place fifth overall in Friday's competition. Donelan's top mark of 201-8 (61.47 meters) came back in April at the ACC Championships, where he placed sixth overall in the event.
Action at the Georgia Tech Invitational will continue on Saturday, as freshmen Nyki Caldwell and Montasia Golden will represent the Deacs in the high jump and triple jump, respectively, while freshman Daniel Harrison takes to the track in the 400 meter dash.
The high jump and triple jump both begin at 11 a.m., while the men's 400 meters is scheduled to race at 2 p.m. Live results can be found at DeltaTiming.com.
