WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest track and field teams are set to compete in their second indoor meet of the season at the JDL Fast Track on Saturday. The Wake Forest Invitational will begin at 9:30 a.m. with field events.
"We are only competing with a small group of athletes this week, primarily in the technical events so that we can get a better idea of their level of preparedness as we begin the indoor season", said head coach John Millar. "With only a few days of practice following the three week Christmas break, we are anxious to see how they compete."
The Demon Deacons will have a total of 25 athletes competing in the meet. 16 will be competing for the women and nine will compete for the men.
Leading the way for the women's competitors is sophomore thrower Casidy Callahan, who will be competing in the shot put and weight throw this weekend. This will be the first time Callahan is competing in the weight throw this season and she is coming off a first-place finish in the shot put at the JDL Fast Track College Kick-off.
Callahan is coming off a very strong freshman season, which included her competing at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships. She set school outdoor records in the hammer and the discus last season. Callahan broke the hammer record twice, first with a mark of 52.30m at the Wake Forest Open and then again with a mark of 52.90m at the HPU VertKlasse Meeting in early April.
In addition to Callahan, several other competitors return to action after top-five finishes at the JDL Fast Track College Kick-off in the opening meet of the season. In the track events, Kendal Knous will compete in the mile run on Saturday after finishing first in the 1000m run in the opening meet. Others with top-five finishes at the College Kick-off that will compete this weekend include Emily Campbell, Montasia Golden, Hunter Roberts, Nikolete Hurrinus, and Natalie Sukramani.
Headlining the men's competition this weekend is sophomore U.S. Junior National Champion Charlie Ionata. He claimed the U.S. Junior National Championship in the hammer throw this past summer. He will compete in the weight throw this weekend. His current PR in the event is 17.94m (58' 10.25"), which he set at the Hilton Garden Innvitational last indoor season.
The Barrington, R.I. native had a record-breaking season as a freshman, setting a school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 61.30m at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in March. He competed in the hammer at the NCAA Regionals, finishing 27th overall with a mark of 198-11 (60.62m). He broke the 60-meter barrier four times this past spring.
Also competing for the men will be eight other athletes, including three throwers that had top-five finishes at the JDL Fast Track College Kick-off. Freshmen John Maurins, Max Adams, and Rusty Provins all had top finishes in the shot put in the opening meet. In their first collegiate meet, Maurins, Adams, and Provins all qualified for the ACC meet with their throws.
"I am looking forward to watching the throwers, especially in the weight throw, as this will be their first competition of the school year. This meet will also serve as good preparation for next week's competition at Vanderbilt."
Following the Wake Forest Invitational, the Demon Deacons will return to action when they travel to Vanderbilt to compete in the Commodore Invitational. It is a two day meet which will begin on Friday, January 16.
