Indoor Track and Field Opens Season Saturday at JDL College Kick-Off Classic

All events will take place at the JDL Fast Track Indoor Track Complex.Field events will begin at 9 a.m. leading off with the weight throw, and the running events will start at 10 a.m. with the 5,000-meter run. Competing in the sprint events for the women's squad will be Mytoia Gathings, Myesha Barr, Erin Brooksand Anneve Waith. Traditionally a jumper, Phoebe Kershawwill race in the 300m dash. Last season at the High Point Vert Klasse Meeting, the Sydney, Australia-native raced in the 200m (28.19). Kershaw was also a member of the 4x400 m relay squad that earned third place (3:56.44). Brianna Dekine, Allison Johnson and Kendall Knous will be a racing trio in the women's 500m, while Caitlin Harnett and Natalie Sukramaniwill represent the squad in the mid-distance 1,000-meter run. Sophomore Montasia Golden will be the lone Deacon competing in the 60-meter hurdles. The women's squad will race two 4x400-meter relays, with an "A" and "B" team. Several Deacs will compete in the field events, with junior Julie McCauley and sophomores Nyki Caldwell and Erika Martinwill compete in the high jump.
Senior Erin Brooks currently holds the school record in both indoor (19-5.5) and outdoor (19-5) long jump and looks to lead the Deacons this season. Brooks will be joined in the event by Montasia Golden and Phoebe Kershaw. Juniors Erika Martin and Julie McCauley will throw the shot put, and sophomore Anna Tessiatorewill be the lone pole vaulter. On the men's side, the 60-meter dash will feature a variety of Demon Deacons, including junior Hiter Harris and freshman William Ray. Throwers Ben Lincoln, Patrick Donelan, Aiden McConnell, Michael Belardia, Nate Wooten, Stephen Michaelsen, Jessie Merckle and K.C. Barrettwill also race in the mixed thrower 60-meter dash. Michael Mastanduno, Brennan O'Brien, Beck Miller, Hiter Harris and William Ray are set to race in the 300-meter dash, while Malcom Nunley and Daniel Harrisonwill compete in the 500-meters. Thomas Bojanowski, Kyle Eager, Michael McEnany and Michael Thomas will take to the track for the 1,000-meters. Like the women, the men will also race two 4x400-meter relay teams. In the field events, junior Michael Mastanduno will look to break his indoor long jump record of 21-0.5. Freshman Michael Thomas will make his collegiate debut in the event. In the high jump, freshman Michael Rufrano will notch his first collegiate competition. The Port Washington, N.Y. native holds a personal best jump of 6' 7.'' Freshman Stephen Michaelsen will make his debut in the shot put. In the weight throw, junior Nate Wooten and sophomore K.C. Barrett will compete. Wooten's best throw is 34-2.75. Following the JDL College Kick-off Classic, the Deacs will not return to racing action until January 18 when they host the Wake Forest Invitational. |
