Deacons Close First Varsity Season

DEACS DEVELOPING A VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
The Wake Forest volleyball team closed out its initial campaign with a 10-23 record, finding success in non-conference play but struggling through a long, tough Atlantic Coast Conference season.

Head Coach Mary Jones guided her young team (a senior, two juniors, a sophomore and a band of freshmen) to an impressive pinnacle of early-season improvement that included a five-match win streak.

The Deacs stayed competitive despite not finding victory in the conference, taking many conference foes, including champion Maryland, to four games and not falling to North Carolina until the fifth game.

SEASON BESTS
Checking in with the single-match bests, Katie Horne (Nashua, N.H./Nashua) set the team season high in kills in a match, with 25, and attacks in a match, with 64, both at Ohio U.

Julie Cowley (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) tallied 62 assists against UNC-Greensboro, which was not only the high mark for the season but a WFU record as well.

Carri Walker (Chesterfield, Mo./St. Joseph's) against Radford and Sharon Harmsworth (Wadena, Saskatchewan/Wadena) vs. UNC-Wilmington tied for the team season high in blocks, with eight.

Harmsworth tallied 33 digs against UNC-Greensboro to set the season high in that stat, and Walker aced her serve seven times against East Carolina for the season high in aces.

BRIGHT SPOTS
The Deacs have found success in breaking records from the programs previous existence, from 1971 to 1986.

Julie Cowley set a new single-season assist mark of 1154., also breaking the assist per game mark with her average of 9.78. Cowley also established a new season dig record as well, with 402 to beat the old mark of 363.

Outside hitter Katie Horne now holds the season attack mark, at 1099, and she tied the Wake Forest record for kills in a season with 394. Junior clocker and co-captain Carri Walker now holds the season block assist record of 87, and, at .91 blocks per game, she tied the Demon Deacon record in that category.
