Balanced Attack Key in Wake Forest Volleyball's Win Over UNC Wilmington

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Four different Demon Deacons registered double-digit kills on Friday night as Wake Forest volleyball defeated UNC Wilmington 3-2 in the first night of the Deacon Invitational.
Senior Andrea Beck registered 20 kills for the second-straight match to begin the year. She was 20-for-31 on attacks with only six errors and a hitting percentage of .452.
Junior Kristin Grissom finished the match with 15 kills while junior Kylie Hargreaves had 14. Freshman Anna Carley tallied 12 as the Deacs hit .368 on the evening. Grissom also led all players with eight block assists.
In the first set, Grissom was five-for-five on attacks while Wake Forest opened it up to a 9-4 lead after Grissom and Carley connected on a block . A service ace from senior Heather Kraft gave the Demon Deacons a 10-point cushion with the score at 17-7. Beck, Carley and Grissom each had kills at the end of the set to give the Deacs a 25-16 win. Wake Forest held the Seahawks to a .043 hitting percentage in the first set.
UNC Wilmington came back in the second set with five kills each from Christi Laite and Sarah Fitzgerald. As a team, the Seahawks improved to a .316 hitting percentage over the first set. With the score tied at 5-5, UNC Wilmington went on a five-point run, extending their lead and eventually winning the set 25-18.
Beck led the Deacs in the third set with seven kills while Grissom assisted on a team-high three blocks. Sophomores Danae Rosendall and Ashlee Rusk each connected on two blocks as well. The set had a total of 11 tie scores and two lead changes, which the Seahawks eventually won 30-28.
Wake Forest controlled the fourth set, beginning it off with a 5-1 run thanks to strong serving from Kraft. With a 16-10 lead, the Deacs rattled off five-straight points en route to a 25-14 victory in the fourth frame.
In the fifth set, Wake Forest began with a run that put the team up 7-2. Grissom and Hargreaves had two-consecutive blocks in the set where the Demon Deacons eventually won 15-7 on a service ace from Hargreaves, sealing the match.
Wake Forest finished the match with 11 team blocks. Freshman Megan Miller tallied 12 digs while Rosendall had 11.
Laite led the Seahawks with 18 kills while Morgan Kline had 13. McKenzie Keightley had a team-high six block assists.
The Deacs play two matches on Saturday to finish up the Deacon Invitational. Beginning with a match against Davidson at 12:30 p.m., the team will host Winthrop at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym.
UNCW and Winthrop open the day with a match at 10:00 a.m. while Davidson and UNCW faceoff at 4:30 p.m. All matches are free to the public.
