OXFORD, Ohio - Wake Forest dropped a pair of matches to Miami (Ohio) and Michigan Saturday afternoon to finish the weekend 0-3 at the Best Western/Sycamore Inn Classic. The Demon Deacons fell in five games to Miami and in three to No. 20-ranked Michigan. In Wake's first match of the day, the host RedHawks edged out the Deacons 28-30, 30-20, 30-24, 28-30, 15-11. Junior Jessica Furlong posted her second double-double of the weekend with 24 kills and 14 digs. Furlong also added three block assists. Furlong was named to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Sara Uniacke led the Deacs with 15 digs, while classmate Abby Miller turned in 13 digs. Senior Jackie Lucas and junior Natalie Mullikin each totaled 14 kills on the day. Mullikin added two block solos and two block assists, while Lucas had three block assists. Sophomore Dylan Faulkner dished out 47 assists and had eight digs. In the nightcap, the nationally-ranked Wolverines downed the Deacs in three straight, 30-22, 30-27, 30-22. Furlong and Mullikin were the only Deacons in double figures for kills with 15 and 14 respectively. Freshman Megan Thornberry led Wake Forest with nine digs, while classmate Kristen White had eight. Fellow freshman Kelsey Jones dished out 33 assists. Jones and White each made their first career start.
Lucas had four block assists, and junior Ashley Homitz added three block assists. Wake Forest returns to action next weekend with its annual Black & Gold Challenge. The Deacons welcome Dayton, Jacksonville and Radford to Reynolds Gymnasium for the tournament. Wake will square off against Dayton on Friday and Radford and Jacksonville on Saturday. |
