ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Wake Forest volleyball team found itself down 21-17 in Set 4 and appeared to be heading to a fifth set with Iowa, but the Demon Deacons went on an 8-1 run to win the set and earn the victory Friday evening at the Active Ankle Challenge.

With the victory, the Deacs are now 3-1 on the year, as they handed the Hawkeyes (3-1) their first loss of the season.

At 21-17 in Set 4, back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Kadija Fornah followed by a kill by senior Lauren McIntyre prompted an Iowa timeout.

A kill by Kristen White and another kill by McIntyre gave the Deacs the lead 22-21. A Hawkeye error gave Wake Forest a 23-21 lead before Iowa was finally able to score a point. At 23-22, McIntyre recorded her third kill of the run, and White and sophomore Andrea Beck finished the match with a block on Mallory Husz.

Fornah recorded her third double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs, while White had her first double-double of the year with season highs of 12 kills and 13 digs. Fornah also had three aces, which was a career-best effort from behind the service line.

Junior Carlin Salmon dominated the net with a career-high four solo blocks. She had six total blocks for the match, to go along with six kills.

Seniors Kelsey Jones and Megan Thornberry and junior Cambrey Oehler also had season-best efforts. Jones dished out 43 assists and had a season-best 15 digs. Thornberry also had a season-best dig total with 21, and Oehler matched Fornah with three aces to record a season high.

The Demon Deacons cruised to a 25-19 Set 1 victory and had a lead that reached seven points when the score was 18-11 after an ace by Fornah.

Wake Forest found itself down 3-0 to start Set 2 but quickly tied the set with three consecutive points of its own. The Deacs took their first lead of the set at 6-5 and would never trail again en route to a 25-18 Set 2 victory.

After dropping Set 3 25-21, the Deacons won in dramatic fashion in Set 4 with their late rally.

Wake Forest will be in action again tomorrow against host St. Louis at 9:30 a.m. central standard time before finishing the Active Ankle Challenge against Creighton at 5 p.m. CST.
