KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan got a double-double from Allyson Doyle and hit .291 as a team to roll to a 3-0 victory over the Wake Forest volleyball team on the opening night of the Holiday Inn West Bronco Classic on Friday. The win was the first of the year for the Broncos (1-3) who posted set victories of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-12. The Deacons fall to 0-4 on the season with the loss. Doyle led all attackers with 16 kills and collected 17 digs while hitting a solid .483. Setter Sam Viox dished out 30 assists for the Broncos while Caitlin Strimel and Katie Eberling picked up 16 and 15 digs, respectively. For the Deacs, freshman Andrea Beck led the way with nine kills on 19 attempts for a .319 hitting percentage. Junior Lauren McIntyre chipped in with seven kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Both Beck and McIntyre also teamed-up for a pair of blocks. Defensively, senior Abby Miller collected a match-high 18 digs on the evening. Junior Kristen White and Cambrey Oehler each picked up 10 digs while setter Kelsey Jones dished out 26 assists and had eight digs. WMU hit a solid .291 in the match with a total of 45 kills. Wake hit just .072 with 29 kills. The Broncos also led the battle at the net, stopping a total of six attacks while the Deacs were out-blocked for the first time this season, collecting just two blocks. With the score tied at 7-7 in the first set, WMU went on a 5-1 run to force a Wake Forest timeout. The Bronco run would continue after the break as they scored eight of the next ten points to take a commanding 20-10 lead and would go on to win the first set 25-15. Oehler had all three of her kills in the first set while also collecting seven digs. The Deacons took an early 4-2 lead in the second-set thanks to three kills from McIntyre but the Broncos regained the momentum they built from the first set and went on an 8-2 run to take a 10-6 lead. After a Wake Forest timeout, WMU went on another 7-2 run to push the lead out to 17-8 and the Deacs would not be able to close the gap, eventually falling 25-17. Doyle had five kills and seven digs in the second set while the Broncos hit .318 as a team. The third set was more of the same as Western Michigan raced out to an 11-4 lead and never looked back, closing out the match with a 25-12 victory. The Deacs ran out of steam in the final frame, managing just eight kills and eight errors. In the first match of the day, Dayton ran past Illinois State in three sets to pick-up its fourth win of the young season. Wake will take on the Flyers at Noon on Saturday and will close out the tournament with a match against Illinois State at 5 pm.
