ELON, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team won two games on Saturday to claim the Elon Phoenix Classic Championship. The Deacs opened the day with a sweep of Charleston Southern and closed the tournament with a four-set win over Elon.

Freshman Katie Moore was named the Elon Phoenix Classic MVP while sophomore Caroline Wolf and junior Hanna Lee were named to the All-Tournament Team.

"What a process this weekend was for us," said head coach Ken Murczek. "Yesterday we played great for two sets against NC Central and then after the break they came out really strong. They forced a fifth set and had the momentum but we took case of business. It was a great win to start the tournament. This morning we were really focused and played clean volleyball against Charleston Southern. We were a little Jekyll and Hyde against Elon tonight but we made adjustments to the lineup in the third set and cut down our errors. It was a nice weekend. Different people stepped up at different times and it helped us tremendously. It's always nice to get some wins but we have some notes of things to improve as we prepare for High Point."

With the 3-0 weekend at Elon, the Demon Deacons improve to 4-2 on the season.

Following Friday's five-set marathon against North Carolina Central, Wake Forest rebounded nicely to make quick work of Charleston Southern in sweeping the Buccaneers 3-0 on Saturday morning.

As a team, the Deacs hit .259 with 43 kills while Charleston Southern mustered a hitting percentage of just .061 with only 24 kills. Senior Matalee Reed led the way with a match-high 12 blocks and a .364 hitting percentage. Kylie Long was the only other player to record double-figure kills in the match, posting 10 to go with seven digs.

Wolf led the team with 17 digs while Sophia Dodd finished with 10. Dodd completed her double-double by tallying 16 assists. Freshman Rachel Burau led the team with 22 assists while fellow freshman Hailey McFadden with a career-high nine digs.

The first and second sets were both tight throughout, as there were three lead changes in each of the first two frames to go with eight ties in the first set and four in the second set. The Demon Deacons took control, though, in the third set, jumping early on the Buccaneers and never looking back. In the final set, Wake Forest only allowed CSU to tie the match twice but never lost the lead.

Wake Forest closed the tournament with a 3-1 win over the host team, Elon. Moore hit .450 with 10 kills and four blocks. Brianna Lynch also added 10 kills in the win. Dodd led the way with 28 assists and four aces to go along with eight digs. Wake Forest won the first set 25-18 but made too many errors in set two and Elon claimed a 25-16 victory. After the break Wake Forest played much cleaner volleyball and tightened up the defense, holding the Phoenix to negative hitting percentages in both sets three and four. The Deacs hit .174 for the match while Elon hit .042.

Up next for the Demon Deacons is the final road tournament of the season in High Point, N.C., for the Panthers Invitational. Wake Forest will take on Marshall on Friday, Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m. before taking on Davidson and High Point at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, Sept. 12.
