Demon Deacons Open Houston Tournament With Sweep of Rice

HOUSTON, Texas - Sophomore Dylan Faulkner posted a double-double of 35 assists and 10 digs to help Wake Forest to a three-game sweep of Rice in the University of Houston Tournament Friday evening at the Athletics/Alumni Center. The Demon Deacons flew by the Owls 30-22, 30-28, 30-25.
Wake Forest moves to 3-4 with the win, while Rice drops to 5-7 on the year.
Faulkner turned in her first double-double of the season and the 13th of her career. She helped the Deacons hit .282 with just nine attacking errors on the night.
Junior Jessica Furlong was the lone Deacon in double figure kills with 10. Furlong also recorded nine digs in the match.
Freshman libero Megan Thornberry led Wake Forest with 18 digs, the fourth straight match she has posted double-digit dig totals.
Fellow freshman Lauren McIntyre was solid at the net, finishing with eight kills and just one error in 17 attempts. She hit .412 on the night and posted four total blocks, including a pair of block solos.
Wake Forest never trailed in game one, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Rice battled back to tie it at 9-9, but the Deacons responded to re-take the lead for good.
Holding a 19-16 lead, Wake used an 8-2 run to pull away from the Owls with a 27-18 margin. It took four match points, but the Deacs finally took the 30-22 victory.
In game two, Wake Forest again never trailed but had to hold off a late Rice rally for the narrow win. The Deacons built an 8-3 lead to start before the Owls climbed back to within one, 12-11.
Wake re-opened its five-point margin, 19-14, only to see Rice fight back into the game. Trailing 28-25, the Owls scored three consecutive points to tie the game. After the Deacons called a timeout, Wake Forest took the next two points, both on Owl errors, for the 30-28 win.
Wake Forest hit .385 as a team in game two, recording 17 kills and two errors in 39 attempts. Thornberry tallied nine of her 18 digs in the contest, while Faulkner dished out 14 assists.
The Deacs held the early advantage in game three but found themselves trailing briefly midway through the contest. Wake Forest held a 17-14 lead before Rice used a 6-1 run to take a 20-18 lead of its own, its first of the night.
The Deacons out-scored the Owls 12-5 the rest of the way to clinch the sweep with a 30-25 victory.
Wake Forest returns to action at the Houston Tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Deacons are set to take on Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. and host Houston at 8 p.m. Both times are EDT.
