Early in set one, Wake Forest went up 6-4 after a kill from Carley. Kylie Hargreaves helped the Deacs extend their lead with a cross-court kill, putting the team up 10-6. North Carolina was forced to take a timeout after Wake Forest took a 12-7 advantage.
A 9-3 run for the Deacs opened the lead up to 15-8. The Tar Heels rallied to eventually tie the match at 20, before taking set one 25-22. Hargreaves had five kills off 11 attempts to lead the Demon Deacons in the opening frame.
The second set was close in the initial points with Carley and Beck highlighting the Wake Forest offense. UNC led 12-8, but the Deacs came back, narrowing the score to 12-11 after a solo block from Hargreaves. Wake Forest ultimately fell in the second set 25-16.
In set three, Wake Forest came back from an early deficit to cut UNC's lead to 6-5. Hargreaves tallied back-to-back kills coupled with an attack error from the Tar Heels pulled the Deacs within one with the score 12-11. Wake Forest though eventually fell in the set 25-14.
Chaniel Nelson led the Tar Heels attack with 10 kills while Tia Gaffen had nine.
