CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jazmen Russell paced Wake Forest with 12 kills on Saturday, but the Demon Deacons fell to Virginia 3-1 (21-25, 25-27, 25-17, 23-25) in Memorial Gym.

Russell also added 14 digs and one solo block. Ashlee Rusk had 10 kills while Kylie Hargreaves had nine. Andrea Beck had eight kills for the Deacs and Megan Miller had 22 digs to lead the team.

The first set began with both teams playing to a five-all tie. Virginia then broke away to lead 11-6. Despite the deficit, the Deacs fought back to make it a 13-11 set after a kill from Russell.

After an attack error from the Cavaliers, the Demon Deacons tied the match at 16. Virginia eventually took the set 25-21. Russell had three kills to lead the Deacs in the set.

Wake Forest took a 5-3 lead in the second set after a booming kill from Hargreaves. Holding onto a 14-13 advantage, Beck and Rosendall registered a block to give the Deacs a two-point lead. A block from Ashlee Rusk and Grissom put Wake Forest up 19-16 though the Cavaliers eventually tied the set at 25 and won the set 27-25.

The Deacs raced out to a 7-3 lead in the third set and extended the lead to11-4. Wake Forest then used a balanced offense and stout defense to keep Virginia at bay through the end of the set. Rusk capped off the set with a kill to win 25-17.

Virginia pulled away from the Deacs, leading12-8 in the fourth set. Wake Forest battled back in the set to tie it at 23 but fell 25-23.

Natalie Bausback led the Cavaliers (7-15, 1-10 ACC) with 22 kills and six block assists. Kayla Sears added 19 kills.

Wake Forest (8-15, 2-9 ACC) heads home next week to play NC State on Friday at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym. The match which is the annual `Dig for a Cure' match, will also be broadcast live on ESPN3.
