Deacs Come Up Short at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Kylie Hargreaves tallied 13 kills on Friday night but it was not enough as Maryland defeated Wake Forest 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26).

Hargreaves had 12 digs to go along with her 13 kills. Andrea Beck and Jazmen Russell each had 10 kills in the match. Megan Miller led the team with 20 digs.

Maryland jumped out early in the first set, leading 8-2 before the Demon Deacons staged a rally. After slimming the Terrapins lead to 21-20, the Deacs kept fighting as Maryland led 24-23 after a kill from Kristin Grissom. But the Terps finished the set out 25-23.

Wake Forest led 3-1 in the second set after a solo block from Grissom. The Deacs were in control for much of the frame and opened it to a 23-17 lead. Hargreaves buried a kill to end the set for Wake Forest 25-20 and tying the match up at one.

In the third set, Maryland led early before Wake Forest grabbed a hold of the lead with a 16-15 advantage for the Deacs. The Terps kept battling and took the close set 25-23.

Maryland made a huge comeback in the fourth set to upend the Deacs 26-24. Wake Forest rolled to a 21-12 lead following a solo block from Beck, but Maryland came back to win 26-24.

Grissom finished with eight kills while Ashlee Rusk had seven. Danae Rosendall, Russell along with Hargreaves has 12 digs apiece. Wake Forest out-blocked the Terps 14 to 13 in the match.

Ashleigh Crutcher had 23 kills for Maryland (13-13, 4-10 ACC) while Adreene Elliot had 10.

Wake Forest (9-17, 3-11 ACC) head to Boston College on Sunday for a match at noon.
