The Wake Forest volleyball team returned to the court for its first practice of the 2018 season at Reynolds Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.

“The energy was fantastic the whole time,” said head coach Bill Ferguson. “The big takeaway was our ability to prepare over the last month. This is the first time we have had enough kids in the program in the spring and summer for the captains to run open gyms. We were able to come right in and not miss a beat.”

The Demon Deacons return 14 players from last year’s squad, led by seniors Hailey Brooke McFadden and Katie Moore, and welcome five freshmen to the club. Junior Caroline Rassenfoss is the team’s returning kills leader as she posted 271 kills last season (2.32 kills/set).

“I saw the freshmen blend in really well,’ said Ferguson. “Sometime the freshmen get a little scared of what’s going on. Michelle Polechonski and Peyton Washington both had really good practices and the other three did well too.”

Last year the Deacons went 13-19 overall and 5-15 in the ACC. The season was highlighted by home conference victories over Clemson, Boston College, North Carolina and Duke.

The team will host Appalachian State on Friday, Aug. 17 for an exhibition match before hosting the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic Aug. 24 and 25. Wake Forest will welcome Maryland, Air Force and UNCG to Reynolds Gymnasium for the season-opening tournament.
