By Nick Sebesta, Wake Forest Media Relations (@SIDeacons) WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With a strong group of returning players and five new freshmen, the Wake Forest volleyball team began practice for the 2012 season on Thursday in Reynolds Gym. Entering her eighth season at the helm of the volleyball program at Wake Forest, head coach Heather Kohl Holmes returns nine players from the 2011 squad including All-ACC selection Andrea Beck. The Deacs finished with six wins in the ACC last season which was highlighted by a 3-1 victory over No.23-ranked Duke University on national television. Beck, a middle blocker from Winston-Salem, N.C., averaged 3.39 kills per set last season while hitting for a percentage of .314. She registered 271 kills despite missing part of the season due to injury. "The team looks really good, we've had a great first day at camp," said Beck. "The freshmen all looked great at camp and I'm excited for all of them." Fellow senior Heather Kraft who played in a career-high 21 matches last season is back to help on the defensive side. Kristin Grissom is one of two juniors on the team who had 137 kills in 2011. Kylie Hargreaves the other junior, started 10 matches last season. A talented sophomore class makes up the majority of the returners which includes Mary Hoey, Rosendall, Dani Thompson, Ashlee Rusk and Jazmen Russell. Rosendall tallied 1,104 assists last season as the primary setter and will look to set up the offense once again. Thompson helped anchor the defense as the libero and averaged over four digs per set. The incoming freshman class includes two outside hitters in Anna Carley and Sam Boesch and a right side hitter in Taylor Dickens. Taylor Deaton comes in as a middle blocker while Megan Miller rounds out the team as a defensive specialist. The Deacs will continue to practice for the next couple of weeks before opening the season at High Point University on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. Later that week, Wake Forest will play host to UNC Wilmington, Davidson and Winthrop in the annual Deacon Invitational. All home games are free to the public. Continual updates on practices and other information can be found on Twitter (@WakeForestvb).
